Meriem Bennani

Party on the CAPS

Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin

The Julia Stoschek Collection presented Meriem Bennani’s first solo exhibition in Germany with Party on the CAPS (2018), an eight-channel video installation exploring displacement, resilience, and the relationship between identity and place. Conceived as a documentary set in a speculative future, the work imagined daily life on CAPS, an island turned megacity in the middle of the Atlantic where migrants were detained.

Amplifying reality through special effects and humor, Bennani highlighted her playful and distinctive visual language, inspired by reality TV, YouTube, documentary, social media, and animation. Party on the CAPS examined the boundaries of the familiar and the strange, the real and the virtual. For its presentation in Berlin, the installation was adapted to the gallery space with screens and sculptural elements that transformed it into a large-scale immersive environment.
