Les yeux dans les yeux
The message is clear: more than half of the works in the Pinault Collection—across all media—deal with the human figure. Through this essential subject, artists confront us with our fellow beings, whose appearance—and so much more—has been immortalized through painting, drawing, photography, or film: through the eyes of another. Nearly 90 works from the Pinault Collection, reflections of contemporary art, have been selected for this exhibition, which orchestrates a face-to-face encounter between the viewers and, for the most part, faces. These faces, whether familiar or unknown, all say something about the history and contemporary vitality of a genre in constant renewal. In their own way, each of these faces offers a sensitive, collective response to the question: what can art do?
Through these gazes and attitudes—the most direct expression of humanity to humanity—we perceive tensions, journeys, emotions, uprisings, feelings, constraints, love, violence: each of these portraits is a landscape to be explored, eye to eye.
The exhibition Les jeux dans les yeux spans art history, speaks to our relationship with the image of ourselves and others in the age of social media, and evokes the idea of disappearance and the sometimes impossible task of capturing a face, an expression, a spirit, an attitude, a soul. Masked gazes mingle with candid ones; intimacy ultimately brushes against eternity.
